PK Mishra, Director of IGMRS lauds Rohini Arora’s works on Chamba Rumal

Welcoming Dr. Rohini Arora, PK Mishra, Director of Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal, highlighted the diverse artistic traditions of Himachal Pradesh. He emphasized that while the state is home to many unique art forms, Chamba Rumal has earned global recognition, setting it apart. He noted that this lecture would pave the way for new researchers and serve as a valuable reference in the field.

Introducing the keynote speaker, Dr. Surya Kumar Pandey shared that Dr. Rohini Arora earned her PhD in Textile and Apparel Science from Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi (2015), focusing on Capacity Building of Artisans for the Sustainability of Traditional Chamba Embroidery. Her research contributed significantly to skill development among Chamba artisans, meticulously documenting traditional dyeing techniques, designs, and materials, while also compiling an extensive collection of Chamba embroidery samples.

During her lecture, Dr. Arora highlighted the rich legacy of Pahari embroidery, traditionally crafted by women in their leisure time. Practiced across undivided Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, it is best known for its stunning Chamba Rumals, pahari cholies, and household textiles. The Chamba Rumal, famed for its intricate double-sided embroidery, remains the most celebrated form, reflecting the region’s artistic excellence and cultural heritage.
