Development of Design Catalogue for Sustenance of Traditional Craft of Chamba Embroidery

Traditional Chamba embroidery carries deep cultural significance, reflecting the beliefs of the communities that created these intricate masterpieces using simple materials and stitches. While embroidered coverlets have been widely studied, the diverse motifs used in this craft remain under-documented.

This research aimed to bridge that gap by developing a design catalogue to support artisans and preserve traditional themes. Through an exploratory field survey, it was found that many embroiderers lacked access to original motifs and designs. The project processed 137 museum photographs, classified 768 sketched motifs into folk and miniature styles, and facilitated artisan training, product development, and exhibitions. This initiative ensures the craft’s continuity while raising awareness of its artistic heritage.
