Documentation of Chamba Rumals in Gawthorpe Museum, Lancashire

The Gawthorpe Textiles Collection holds around 500 textiles from the Indian Subcontinent, including two exceptional Chamba rumals—one depicting riders on horseback and the other illustrating scenes from Lord Krishna’s life.
Originating in 17th-century Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, these embroidered textiles were influenced by Pahari miniature painting and traditionally used as ceremonial coverings or gift wrappings.
To further explore their significance, the collection partnered with Dr. Rohini Arora, author of Embroidered Narratives of Pahari Embroidery. She analayzed their intricate designs and techniques, offering deeper insight into their artistry and cultural heritage.
